A Nurse's Hair Loss, Recovery & Regrowth After Chemotherapy

Hair loss due to chemotherapy is undoubtedly one of the most challenging aspects of treatment. It can make us feel unrecognizable, leading to a loss of identity that can be difficult to cope with. However, regaining our hair is a brilliant way to regain some of our identity. However, it can the process can feel painfully slow.

As a nurse now 11 months post-chemo with some of my former hair regrew naturally. I’d like to share some personal tips and tricks I’ve gathered along the way to help speed up the return of my luscious locks!

1.5 Months Post-Chemo
The first step in my journey was focusing on my overall health. As a nurse, I understand the importance of proper nutrition. I prioritized protein in my diet and incorporated biotin and collagen supplements—always remember to consult your healthcare professionals before starting any new supplements.

3 Months Post-Chemo
Taking care of my scalp became crucial, especially during the bald phase. I found that using a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and moisturizing my scalp with massages worked wonders. Coconut oil, leave-in conditioners, and hair masks became my go-to products. If you're looking for hair growth treatments, don't hesitate to ask your hairstylist for recommendations, and always consult your medical team, especially if the products contain medicinal ingredients. 


6 Months Post-Chemo
I learned that certain essential oils, like rosemary, may promote hair growth. I used rosemary with castor oil as a treatment for my scalp and hair.

9 Months Post-Chemo
To minimize damage to my new hair, I made a conscious effort to limit the use of dye, bleach, heat styling, and over-washing, allowing my natural oils to nourish my hair. While the ends of my hair appeared a bit lighter and drier, the majority of it felt incredibly soft.

10 Months Post-Chemo
Lastly, the most challenging piece of advice I can offer is to practice patience. The regrowth journey can be lengthy, and accepting this process is vital. If you’re open to experimenting with cuts or colors, consider trying out fun styles to keep things fresh and exciting. Accessories can also be a great way to change up your look and express your evolving identity.
